NSWCCC Basketball

St Andrews College competed in the NSWCCC Basketball Tournament at Penrith Basketball Stadium on the 20th and 21st of June. The team was under great pressure as they came third in the tournament last year. With a younger team and great enthusiasm the players set out to repeat last years result.

On day one the team played in three games against some fierce competition. In the first game they came up a few points short in a hotly contested match. The second match was against tournament favourites St Gregory’s College.

A fantastic start enabled the boys to get to an eight-point lead in the first ten minutes. St Gregory’s showed great poise and patience to take control of the game, winning by eight points. The boys finished with a strong win in the third game to get the tournament back on track.

Another early start to day two and the boys were keen to put the disappointment of day one behind them. A slow start to game one and with only six minutes left in the game, the game looked lost being 13 points behind. A spike in effort and commitment enabled the boys to claw their way back to level the scores with only 2.8 seconds to go and we were headed for overtime. The opposition were able to secure the ball and with the buzzer sounding a half way shot was put up and to the astonishment of the crowed it went in and the boys lost on the bell, a heart breaking loss for all involved. In the last game the boys executed well and were able to have a comfortable victory winning by 52 points.

As expected each game was played with the utmost respect for the opposition and referees. All players contributed well, although, special mention must go to Hilary and Raphael who were outstanding in all games. It was also a sad occasion for Noel and Raphael who have played their last game for St Andrews College. We thank them for their efforts and leadership in their many years playing Basketball for St Andrews College.

Special thank you must go to the super coach Miss Cassie Knezevic who gives up an enormous amount of time to coach and mentor the players to get them to this level. Without her, St Andrews College Basketball wouldn’t be where it is today.

Thank you to all the boys on their outstanding achievement and we now turn our attention to next year and continuing a positive basketball tradition here at St Andrews College.
